Norman Ashe

Player #481 for Aston Villa, Norman James Ashe, known as Norman Ashe, played as an outside right for the club.

Norman played for Villa between 1959-60 and 1961-62 making 5 appearances.

Norman was born in Bloxwich, just 10 miles from Villa Park, on 16 November 1943 and made his debut appearance for Villa on Saturday, 2 January 1960 aged just 16.

Villa may have had an up and down time on the pitch during the 1950s however one thing the club got very right was their youth policy of which Norman Ashe was a product.

Dubbed ‘Mercer’s Minors’ the group included Alan Deakin, Charlie Aitken, John Sleeuwenhoek, Harry Burrows, Mike Tindall and Alan Baker. Although Norman wasn’t the most successful of the ‘Minors’ he had sterling influence over three spells with Cornish side Falmouth Town.

Before that however Villa had signed Norman from Brierley Hill Schoolboys in July 1958 and he signed professional forms with the club in November 1960.

Norman made just the one appearance as Villa took the Second Division Championship and won promotion back to Division One at the first attempt.

Norman would not feature at all in the following season and would only return to the first team in 1961-62 making 4 appearances and playing his final game for Villa on Saturday, 28 October 1961 still only 17 before moving on to Rotherham United for a fee of £2,000.

Norman played under manager Joe Mercer.
