On This Day
Villa open the season with a morale boosting win over Chelsea to get their first division campaign off to the best possible start.
Joe Mercer's Villa open the 1960-61 season and their first season back in the top flight since 1958-59 with a win over a Chelsea side who narrowly avoided relegation alongside Villa's neighbours Birmingham in 1959-60. Villa's win was their first top flight victory since March 1959 and only the seventh in Mercer's now 73 game reign.
