On This Day
Villa win at Home Park but not after a bizarre penalty incident that saw the Plymouth taker pass to his team mate to score past Nigel Sims.
A Gerry Hitchens hat-trick and no little skill from Harry Burrows and Jimmy MacEwan clinch the 4th round tie on Villa's way to winning the first ever League Cup.
Joe Mercer's Villa finally beat second division Plymouth in the second replay at Home Park to progress to the inaugural League Cup quarter final. This fixture came ten games after the first replay and was the fourth game in ten days that Villa were required to contest due to fixture congestion.
