Doug Winton

Player #472 for Aston Villa, George Douglas Winton, known as Doug Winton, played as a full back for the club.

Doug played for Villa between 1958-59 and 1960-61 making 50 appearances.

Doug was born in Perth, Scotland, on 6 October 1929 and made his debut appearance for Villa on Saturday, 14 February 1959 aged 29.

Villa had signed Doug from Burnley and was an ever present from debut to the end of Villa’s relegation season of 1958-59.

Doug however would play no part in the following season as Villa took the Second Division Championship and won promotion back to Division One at the first attempt.

Doug returned to first team duty in Division One during the 1960-61 season helping Villa to a 9th placed finish with 22 appearances.

Doug also helped Villa to the FA Cup Semi finals in 1958-59 and appeared 7 times in Villa’s run to the League Cup final in 1960-61 although he had left the club by the time Villa went on to lift the trophy after vanquishing Rotherham United in the delayed two legged final in 1961-62.

Doug played his final game for Villa on Saturday, 4 March 1961 aged 31 before moving on to Rochdale.

Doug had played under manager Joe Mercer.

Doug passed away in Burnley on 29 October 2006 aged 77.
