"The game from this stage became very uninteresting, the Wanderers being unable to make any headway of a tangible kind, and they retired defeated by four goals to none."

WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS v. ASTON VILLA.
A gale of wind was blowing at Wolverhampton when these teams met to play their first League match of the season, before moderate attendance of spectators.
Each team was strongly representative, the Wanderers forward division having been altered owing to the weak attack of late, and the Villa sent their best eleven.
On the game being started the Wanderers got down, but were immediately driven back, and with a grand cross shot Hodgetts scored in a couple of minutes, while five minutes later he put on another point for the visitors.
For some time the Viila held the upper hand, and then the Wanderers pressed in a vigorous manner, but were met by such a stubborn and clever defence that they were unable to break through, and at half-time the score stood—Villa, two; Wanderers, none.
On resuming the Villa broke away. Chatt putting on the fourth point, and Hodgetts owing to a misunderstanding by the Wanderers backs, added another easy one.
The game from this stage became very uninteresting, the Wanderers being unable to make any headway of a tangible kind, and they retired defeated by four goals to none.
