Len Capewell scores his 26th goal of the season amongst strikes from Arthur Dorrell and Billy Walker as Villa bounce back from their unlucky defeat in the FA Cup final defeat to beat second placed Huddersfield who would go on to be crowned Champions.
Villa win a third successive League game and close out their division one campaign for 1923-24 with eighteen wins, thirteen draws and eleven defeats in their forty two top flight games.
1923-24 proved to be a season notable for two main reasons on the pitch and one tragedy off it.
Firstly, Villaโs record eighth FA Cup final appearance, all coming under Secretary Manager George Ramsay, and only their second defeat.
Secondly, the regularity with which Villa failed to score, drawing a blank on a total of sixteen occasions across their 48 game season.
Villa failed to hit the net in a third of their games but still managed to finish sixth for the second successive season, as for all their difficulties in front of goal, Len Capewell apart, they conceded just 40 goals across the season, keeping 22 clean sheets.
Off the pitch the murder of Villa centre back Tommy Ball sent shockwaves through the club and football and it is to the great credit of George Ramsayโs men that they not only continued on, but maintained form in extremely trying, tragic circumstances.
