On This Day
Villa win the Championship and promotion back to the first division after two seasons away without kicking a ball since their game on the 27th April.
All three 'rivals' Manchester United, Coventry City and Sheffield United lose their games on 30th April to leave them unable to catch Jimmy Hogan's Villa.
Manchester United are beaten at West Ham, Coventry at Plymouth and Sheffield United at Southampton.
For Sheffield United it is their final game of the season, Coventry and Manchester United however also play on 7 May with Villa.
With Villa's title and promotion secured it is now just a battle to see who comes second and takes promotion.
Although the final game of the season is somewhat meaningless, Freddie Haycock scores to help Jimmy Hogan's second division champions and FA Cup semi finalists to a fourth consecutive win to end an excellent campaign with top tier football to look forward to in 1938-39.
Villa end an outstanding season with four consecutive victories, twenty five in total, an FA Cup semi final, the scalps of three division one clubs, promotion and the second division Championship after two seasons away from the top flight.
The difference to 1936-37 could barely be overstated and the difficulties of the previous three seasons were soon forgotten.
The jury on Jimmy Hogan was no longer out, he was the mastermind of promotion and a return to scoring form for Villa, as the top flight beckoned.
As for their rivals who had pushed them all the way in a four team race almost throughout the season, Manchester United beat Bury to take second place and the final promotion spot, Coventry draw with relegated Stockport to finish the season fourth and five points behind Villa whilst Sheffield United, who had already finished their campaign a week previously, miss out on promotion on goal average.
