Frank Broome scores a brace to make it four goals in as many games and thirteen in his last fifteen but a nervous Villa defence and a Stockport side fighting for their lives at the foot of the table makes the victory less straightforward than expected.
Villa make it consecutive victories to win for the third time in four.
Villa make it twenty three wins, seven draws and ten defeats in forty division two games.
Villa's victory keeps them top of the table on 53 points with two games to play, level on points however is Sheffield United who also win but they have only two points available having played a game more.
Meanwhile Coventry lose and Manchester United win for the pair to sit joint third on 51 points apiece with two to play.
One more win and Sheffield United cannot overtake them, whilst Coventry and/or United need to win both games to finish above Villa should they beat Bradford Park Avenue in their penultimate game.
