For the two highest scorers in the first division to meet and put on a bore of a match is a surprise but that is exactly what they did as the Wednesday defence snuffed out Villa.

Villa end a run of three victories, during which they scored eighteen goals as they fail to score for the second time in five games in their loss at Hillsborough.

Villa make it four wins, a draw and two defeats in seven division one games so far in 1931-32.

The strange league table continues to confound as three successive high scoring wins see Villa stranded, unmoved in 7th, yet a single narrow defeat sees them tumble to 9th. The reason is Villa have two, in some cases three games in hand on the rest of the table but how and why so early in the season having played every week isn't clear. 

Up next are Bolton, one of the three sides level on points with Villa and against whom a win would surely mean some movement up the table.
