Joe Tate
Player #328 for Aston Villa, Joseph Thomas Tate, known as Joe Tate played as a midfielder for the club in the position then known as a left half.
Joe played for Villa between 1927-28 and 1933-34 making 191 appearances and scoring 4 goals.
Joe was born in Old Hill, Staffs on 4 August 1904 and made his debut appearance for Villa on the 26 December 1927 aged 23.
Villa had signed Joe from Cradley Heath and although only making 4 appearances in his debut season the following year he made the position his own as he helped Villa to 3rd place and an FA Cup semi final.
For season 1930-31 he was an ever present as Villa finished League runners up, he was less of a regular in the 1932-33 2nd place season as injury led him to lose his place in February 1933 and he would play just once more - on 25 November 1933 aged 29, after which he left Villa to become player-manager of Brierley Hill Alliance.
Along with fellow star defenders, Jimmy Gibson and Alec Talbot the three became collectively known as “Wind, Sleet and Rain” for their solid defensive work their time with Villa exemplified even if honours were not forthcoming as in previous decades.
Joe had played under the Billy Smith led Management Committee.
Joe passed away in Cradley Heath on 18th May 1973 aged 68.
