ON THIS DAY
Saturday, 4 March 1972
Villa visit promotion rivals and third placed County and hammer their opponents after a goalless first half to leave the one time league leaders in disarray down in fourth, with two games in hand by now six points behind Vic Crowe’s side.
Bournemouth remain second, three points behind, courtesy of their home win whilst Brighton climb into the top three, four points off the top.
Villa’s new signing Ian Ross proves a revelation in midfield meanwhile Jimmy Cumbes, despite the occasional blunder, has kept nine clean sheets in his fourteen games, conceding just five goals.
Vic Crowe's Villa make it twelve wins in fourteen and twenty two wins, three draws and six defeats in division three so far this campaign. As a result of winning the promotion 'four pointer', Villa (played 31, points 47) put themselves six points ahead of County (played 29, points 41) relegating them to a distant fourth place as well as maintaining the gap to Bournemouth (played 31, points 44) and the new third place team Brighton and Hove Albion (played 31, points 43).
