What they Said

"Although Aston had the better of the game, the closing minutes of the match were at hand before Devey drew level for them."

NOTTS COUNTY V. ASTON VILLA

This match, teeming with interest, was played at the Old Trent Bridge Ground, Nottingham, on Saturday afternoon, in the presence of thousands of spectators; in fact, every available space was occupied. Both clubs played their full strength. The local team winning the toss, the Villans’ set the ball in motion.

After a few minutes hot work Devey, the centre, passed to Athersmith, on the right, and he shot through amid the cheering the Birmingham contingent present.

Subsequently the Notts forwards forced the pace and a goal resulted, though not without protest from the opposing side.

Play was remarkably fast, each team pressing in a determined manner, and Devey (Notts) taking possession of the ball centred Langham, who added second point for the “City.”

At half-time the score read—Notts, two; Aston Villa, one.

In the second portion the Notts men for a long time more than held their own, the forwards playing an excellent game, though gradually tiring.

Appearances pointed to easy victory for the home side, but just before the wind up for the Villa Athersmith rushed on his wing, and, passing to Wheldon, the latter added a second point.

In less than two minutes the visitors’ forwards rushed away, and securing further goal made the final score

Villa, three goals: Notts County, two.
