"From this the Villa pressed, but nothing more was done, and an exciting game ended: Aston Villa, three goals Bolton Wanderers, two."

THE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP.
FIRST DIVISION.
ASTON VILLA V. BOLTON WANDERERS
After making a bad start at Aston Lower Grounds on Saturday, the Villa, sticking to their work in capital style, managed to come out victorious the end against Bolton Wanderers by three goals to two.
Crabtree was not able to play, as he was suffering from quinsey, and Spencer hurt his leg against Sheffield Wednesday on Monday. B Sharp took the place of the latter at back, and Burton was again in the half-back line. J Sharp took the place of Fisher as centre forward.
The contest opened in sensational style, for after kicking off the Wanderers went right for the Villa goal, and Jack shot into the net, the first point falling to the visitors after less than half a minutes’ play.
The Villa pressed after this, and the forwards put in some nice runs. Sutcliffe saved from Wheldon, and John Cowan missed the upright from a scrimmage. Sutcliffe stopped a hard shot from John Cowan, and then from Wheldon, the custodian’s display being brilliant.
The the Wanderers broke away, and Wright beat Wilkes at the other end, and then the interval arrived the Wanderers were leading by two goals to none.
The Villa were quickly the offensive, but Sutcliffe saved, and Wright sent over the bar at the opposite end. The game was very even for a time, both sides attacking in turn. At length Wheldon passed to J Sharp across goal and the latter scored.
Then Sutcliffe effected a brilliant save, but a few minutes later J Sharp scored a second goal.
Then Athersmith ran up the wing, and centring well, Wheldon put on the third point, the Villa thus getting in front.
From this the Villa pressed, but nothing more was done, and an exciting game ended: Aston Villa, three goals Bolton Wanderers, two.
