WEST BROMWICH ALBION V. ASTON VILLA
At West Bromwich, The Albion kicked up hill in the first half.
The visitors repeatedly attacked almost immediately, and after Reader had repelled, Chatt shot outside. The Albion next attacking, Sharpe missed his kick but the visitors managed to clear. Again the Albion got away, but Burton relieved just when Higgins was about to shoot. At the other end Devey had a very neat shot, Reader having great difficulty in saving. A foul gave the Villa a chance, but the ball was headed outside.
Garfield and M’Kenzie led a smart charge, but the former was compelled to put the ball outside, and the Villa returned to the other end, where Cowan had a chance, but outside. Directly after Garfield and Sharp came in violent contact, and the former was hurt, but resumed his place. John Cowan hurt his team and retired.
The Villa pressed for a time, and then Bassett and Hewitt for to the top end, only to be beaten back. Williams conceded a corner, but Sharpe shot outside, and Devey spoilt a shot by Wheldon.
Towards the interval the Albion pressed, Half time - Albion, 0; Villa, 0.
The game was resumed, the Villa still being a man short. The Albion raced off, and some warm work was witnessed in the Villa goal. Garfield missed a good chance, and immediately after M’Manus just sent the ball over. After a breakaway by the Albion a run by the visitors enabled Sharp to score.
The Throstles besieged their opponents goal, and the custodian had difficult work to save. A corner to Albion gave George another opportunity to show up with a fine save, and a second corner resulted, Albion having hard lines.
The pressure on the lower goal for some time was great, but the defence was splendid, shot after shot being returned, and George especially showing quite exception good form. At length Garfield scored.
Result - one goal all.
