James made 18 appearances for Villa during the 1897-98 season..
James was born in Denny, Falkirk, Scotland on 23rd December 1876 and made his debut for the club as a 20 year old on 1st September 1897.
Villa had signed James from St. Bernard’s FC with all his 18 appearances coming in the league as Villa went in to finish 6th.
James made his final appearance for Villa on 30th April 1898 in the final league game of the season - a 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest at Villa Park.
James had played under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.
James subsequently moved on to Celtic.
James passed away on 4th December 1937 aged 60.
