James made his final appearance for Villa on 30th April 1898 in the final league game of the season - a 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest at Villa Park.
James had played under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.
James subsequently moved on to Celtic.
James passed away on 4th December 1937 aged 60.
