Joe Mercer’s Villa end the season without a win in three having played their fifth game in ten days. As a result, Villa make it eighteen wins, eight draws and sixteen defeats in forty two Division One games this season to finish seventh in the table in a season notable for some strong League runs under Mercer including a number of impressive wins. That Villa also won the 1960-61 League Cup that was carried over to this season due to fixture congestion underlined that a side, who Mercer had brought out of the second tier just two seasons earlier, was well and truly back on the map.
