"Villa took the lead in the ninth minute when David Platt scored his 12th goal of the season with a close-in header after a flick-on by lan Ormondroyd."
FULL-BACK Chris Price popped up 10 minutes from time to spare Villa's blushes.
United skipper Vinny Jones headed an equaliser five minutes after half-time and, along with John Gannon and striker Brian Deane, put United in control.
The Jones goal was the first United had scored in seven League matches, and it suddenly gave them belief that they could win at last.
Villa took the lead in the ninth minute when David Platt scored his 12th goal of the season with a close-in header after a flick-on by lan Ormondroyd.
But following the equaliser United gained command and Deane missed a great chance with a header before a lapse in concentration by 18-year-old left back Richard Lucas let Villa off the hook.
He gave the ball away and Ormondroyd brilliantly killed it on his thigh before lobbing it into the path of Price, who drove home a right-footed shot.
United manager Dave Bassett said: "We were in the game at 1-1 but a lack of concentration created our own error and we were punished."
