Glyn Hodges troubled Villa with a series of crosses and slung over yet another in the 49th minute.
Gage headed weakly back towards keeper Nigel Spink. lan Bryson saw the opportunity and raced in to shoot low past the stranded Villa keeper.
But Villa levelled five minutes later when Derek Mountfield rose to head home a Gordon Cowans corner.
United hit back, Hodges corner falling for Deane to power in the 62nd minute winner.
