On This Day
Villa open the season with a draw against Southampton in Jozef Vengloลก' first game in charge to become the first non British or Irish manager to take charge at a top flight club in the League's 102 year history.
Jozef Vengloลก leads Villa for the first time and in so doing becomes the first 'overseas' manager to take charge at a top flight club in the League's 102 year history.
What they Said
"Within four minutes Villa were level when Tony Daley's cross was headed in from 10 yards by Tony Cascarino."
CLASSY Matthew Le Tissier prevented Villa's new manager Jozef Venglos from making a winning start.
And the Czech doctor will be concerned about healing his rocky defence.
The solid backline that England boss Graham Taylor built at Villa Park was unrecognisable.
Le Tissier ripped them apart in the fifth minute. He sent a magnificent 60-yard pass to put Rodney Wallace clean through, only for the left winger to shoot against the post.
Three minutes later the Villa defence was rocking and reeling again as Paul Rideout put Le Tissier clear.
He sidestepped Derek Mountfield to put Southampton ahead.
Within four minutes Villa were level when Tony Daley's cross was headed in from 10 yards by Tony Cascarino.
