"Daley's pace was causing Derby many problems and in the 20th minute the winger nearly netted a second goal."
*Sunday Life*
Sunday, 16 September 1990
A brilliant display from Nigel Spink condemned troubled Derby to another miserable weekend as Aston Villa clinched a hard fought victory.
Spink produced a string of world class saves to deny spirited Derby side who have yet to record a victory this season and who can count themselves unlucky to have met Spink in such form.
But Villa got the goals that mattered, Tony Daley giving them the lead in the 15th minute after Tony Cascarino knocked down a Paul McGrath free kick and Daley got round defender Patterson to strike a first-time shot across Shilton and into the far corner.
Daley's pace was causing Derby many problems and in the 20th minute the winger nearly netted a second goal.
Cascarino sprinted down the right and drove in a low cross which Daley nearly forced past Shilton.
Derby's frustration resulted in a booking for Harford on the half hour for a tackle from behind on Gage.
England midfielder Platt wrapped up the points for the visitors when he scored their second goal 15 minutes from the end with a 20 yard volley.
