"David Platt dashed all hopes of Sunderland salvaging a point after 76 minutes."
*Sunday Tribune*
Sunday, 24 March 1991
TONY Cascarino hammered another nail in Sunderland's coffin at Roker Park yesterday just as he did four years ago when condemning the Roker side to the third division for the first time in their history.
The Republic of Ireland striker scored five goals against Sunderland in the play-offs and he was at it again with a double strike to improve Villa's first division survival campaign.
Cascarino struck in the 36th minute when converting a centre from Gary Penrice and seven minutes after the interval he increased Villa's lead.
Both goals came against the run of play, his second effort taking a wicked deflection off Paul Bracewell.
Substitute Peter Davenport threw Sunderland a lifeline after 55 minutes when ending a run of 10 matches without a goal but England international David Platt dashed all hopes of Sunderland salvaging a point after 76 minutes.
