Villa secure a well deserved fifth league win in ten under Joe Mercer to remain one place off the relegation spots with nine first division games left to play. Villa had now opened a five point gap to the bottom two clubs, Portsmouth and Leicester City and were one point behind fellow strugglers Tottenham, Manchester City and Luton. Villa now faced Tottenham twice in the next three games with the opportunity to climb well clear of any risk of relegation.
Joe Mercer's Villa record successive League wins for the first time under his leadership and for the first time since April 1956 to make it eleven wins, four draws and eighteen losses in thirty three division one games as the change in leadership begins to show progress with nine games left to play.
