On This Day
Villa make it 27 goals conceded in six successive defeats as they are beaten into submission by high flying Wolves. Debutant Jack Willis plays his first and last game for the club, Gordon Lee his fourth and John Sharples his third, yet the quality of the recruitment does not appear to match the desperate need for new players to add quality to boss Eric Houghton's options.
Eric Houghton's Villa suffer a sixth successive defeat for the first time since March 1951 and do so for only the third time in their history and have now shipped twenty four goals in six games. As a result Villa make it one win, one draw and six defeats in eight division one games so far this season, scoring twelve and conceding twenty seven with a season of struggle now inevitable.
Meanwhile, winger Jack Willis made sole appearance for Villa aged 24 after moving from Mossley in August 1958. Willis moved on to Bolton in 1960.
