Villa three nil up collapse as debutant 'keeper Beaton concedes six but saves his new side from many more. As a result Houghton would leave his managerial post with immediate effect with Villa facing an increasingly difficult fight to avoid relegation. 

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Bill Beaton made his sole appearance for Villa aged 23 after joining the club from Dunfermline Athletic in October 1958. Beaton moved on to Airdrie in February 1960. Also making their final appearance was full back John Sharples who made his thirteenth and final appearance for Villa aged 24 before moving to Walsall in August 1959.
