Biography
Wally Hazelden
Player #459 for Aston Villa, Walter Hazelden, known as Wally Hazelden, played as an inside forward for the club.
Wally played for Villa in 1957-58 and 1958-59 making 19 appearances and scoring 5 goals.
Wally was born in Ashton-in-Makerfield on 13 February 1941 and made his debut appearance for Villa on Saturday, 9 November 1957 aged just 16.
Villa had signed Wally from Wigan Schoolboy football as a junior player in 1956 and he signed professional forms with the club in February 1958 following his goalscoring debut against West Bromwich Albion, a game in which he also set up Villaโs second.
In total Wally made 19 appearances before the age of 18 - playing his final game for Villa on Saturday, 20 December 1958, still aged 17.
Surprisingly, Wally was allowed to join non league Wigan Athletic in July 1960 still aged only 19 for whom he hit 23 goals in 26 league games in the 1960-61 season, after which he disappeared from football.
Wally had played under managers Eric Houghton and Joe Mercer.
Wally passed away in 2019.
