John was born in Heath Town, Wolverhampton, just 10 miles from Villa Park, on 8 August 1934 and made his debut appearance for Villa on Monday, 8 September 1958 aged 24 against his hometown club Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Villa had signed John from Heath Town FC in October 1955 and he would move on to Walsall August 1959 after playing his final game for Villa on Saturday, 15 November 1958 just over 2 months and 12 games after his debut with Villa heading to the bottom of the table.
John had played under manager Joe Mercer.
John passed away in Wolverhampton on 1 September 2001 aged 67.
