Ken Barrett

Player #469 for Aston Villa, Kenneth Brian Barrett, known as Ken Barrett, played as an outside left for the club.

John played for Villa in 1958-59 making 5 appearances and scoring 3 goals.

Ken was born in Bromsgrove, just 18 miles from Villa Park, on 5 May 1938 and made his debut appearance for Villa on Saturday, 4 October 1958 aged 20.

Ken had been spotted by former Villa forward Frank Shell as a 15-year-old playing for Stoke Works in Bromsgrove and was invited for a trial and being taken on as a part-time professional in 1953.

Ken would be signed to full professional forms with Villa in February 1957 by then boss Eric Houghton.

Despite scoring a brace on debut in the 2-1 defeat of Newcastle United on Saturday, 4 October 1958 and hitting another goal in his second game for the club he would only feature a further three times.

His final appearance came on Saturday, 1 November 1958 less than a month after his debut and was famously awoken by an attentive police officer who informed him “Don’t be alarmed son but you need to get your backside up to Villa Park, you’re playing for Villa today at Luton, so you’d better get a move on!”.

With Eric Houghton’s departure soon after, Ken could not find a first team opportunity with new boss Joe Mercer and he moved on to Lincoln City in June 1959.

Ken passed away in Droitwich on 7 June 2015 aged 77.
