On This Day
How could it be? 'Lowly' Villa beat the mighty Leicester to close within a point of the East Midlands giants just a day after being labelled relegation fodder. Funny old game. The arrogance of a club without a trophy was, and continues to be something to behold.
In more important news, Villa secure first division safety after a largely torrid season under Dick Taylor as their latest result in a six game unbeaten run relegates Wolves alongside already gone Birmingham.
Villa climb to the heady height of 18th, and though first division football for 1965-66 is hugely welcomed, there are few convinced by Dick Taylor as the man to build from here.
Dick Taylor's Villa are now unbeaten in six League games for the first time this season and in a remarkable turn of form register their fourth win in six to make it fifteen wins, four draws and twenty one defeats in forty division one matches this season. At the same point in 1963-64, under former manager Joe Mercer, Villa had lost seventeen and won ten before going on to finish 19th, two places above relegation after losing their final two games of the season. Villaโs best run of the season stood in stark contrast to their form prior to April but better late than never the end of season run secured their top flight status in an otherwise disappointing season under Dick Taylor save for a Cup run highlighted by the sound beating of lower division opposition.
