Phil Woosnam

Player #500 for Aston Villa, Philip Abraham Woosnam, known as Phil Woosnam, played as a forward for the club.

Phil played for Villa between 1962-63 and 1965-66 making 125 appearances and scoring 29 goals.

Phil was born in Caersws, Montgomeryshire, Wales on 22 December 1932 and made his debut appearance for Villa on Saturday, 1 December 1962 aged 29. Phil had been crowned “Amateur Footballer of the Year” in 1955.

Villa had signed Phil from West Ham United for a fee of £25,000 in November 1962.

Phil made 21 league and cup appearances in his debut season but did not feature in either leg of the 1963 League Cup Final against Birmingham City.

Phil became a regular starter for Villa making over 30 appearances in 1964-65 and 1965-66.

Phil was a player of superb quality who made the careers of less capable teammates such as Tony Hateley through the consistent excellence of his ball delivery.

Sadly Phil had joined Villa late in his career and so all too soon he played his final game for the club on Monday, 16 May 1966 after just 4 seasons.

But if a player typified the style the Villa faithful loved it was Phil.

Phil moved on to Atlanta Chiefs in the NASL as player coach aged 33 and was instrumental in the development of football in the US and created a pathway for his Villa team-mates to join him in later years.

Phil had played under Villa managers Joe Mercer and Dick Taylor.

Phil was a cousin of golfer Ian Woosnam.

Phil passed away in Dunwoody, Georgia, USA on 19 July 2013 aged 80.
