Villa's poor fortune hits again as for the second successive game they lose a player for an extended period with 10 men. Last Saturday it was Vic Potts missing all but 8 minutes of the second half in Villa's defeat to Manchester United. This week it was Albert J Brown who is forced off the pitch for over half and hour due to concussion sustained in a heavy Preston challenge.
For once however misfortune did not stop Villa unlike at Everton, Chelsea, Arsenal and Maine Road for Brown returned from his enforced absence to inspire Villa to a second victory in three.
Brown had opened the scoring after 16', left the field after 35' returning after 65. created Jackie Martin's second goal on 69' and Dicky Dorsett's on 70'.
Meanwhile Jackie Martin scored two and created one as title chasing Preston were swept aside at Villa Park.
Villa climb back to joint 8th alongside Portsmouth, Manchester City, Chelsea and Everton with Portsmouth at Fratton Park up next.
