Villa extend their unbeaten run to eight but yet again Grimsby take the lead against the run of play and even surprise themselves as Joe Rutherford misjudges a weak cross and it ends in the back of the net after 11'.
More astonishingly they double their lead early in the second half before Villa hit back with two goals in the final 10 including a last minute penalty to secure a paltry point.
Despite their run of four consecutive draws Villa remain joint fourth.
