Ron Guttridge

Player #407 for Aston Villa, Ronald W. Guttridge, known as Ron Guttridge, played as a left back for the club. Ron played for Villa in 1946-47 and 1947-48 making 15 appearances over his two seasons with the club.

Born in St Helens and signed from the famed non-league outfit Prescot Cables in 1937, Ron arrived at Villa only to find people persisted in calling him “Roy”, the name stuck for many, but Ron, was Ron.

Ron was born on 28 April 1916 and made his debut appearance for Villa on Saturday, 18 January 1947 at the age of 30.

Although Villa had signed Ron from Prescot Cables FC and up until his Villa debut he had been with a number of different non-league sides. Villa was his first big chance and he joined already a veteran, being used sparingly over his 2 seasons as a back up to the first team.

After 4 appearances in 1947-48 including his final game on Saturday, 25 October 1947 aged 31, Ron moved on to Brighton, then in the Third Division South, the following year.

Ron played under Villa manager Alex Massie.
