Player #410 for Aston Villa, Robert Albert John Brown, known as Albert Brown, and nicknamed Sailor, played as an inside forward for the club. Albert played for Villa in 1947-48 and 1948-49 making 31 appearances and scoring 9 goals.
Albert was born in Great Yarmouth on 7 November 1915 and made his debut appearance for Villa on Saturday, 18 October 1947 at the age of 31.
Albert started his football career with Charlton as a scheming inside forward, rising to sufficient prominence to represent the FA in their tour of South Africa in 1939 and to win full England recognition. Albert moved onto Forest where he was appointed captain and proved to be their leading goalscorer, he moved to Villa in October 1947 and brought his form with him for a fee of £10,000, fitting into the side as a constructive player with first rate ball control and plenty of dash with an aptness for taking chances that fell to him.
Despite the transfer fee paid - then the club’s record highest fee paid - Albert was only a prominent member of the Villa first team in his debut season with 8 goals in 23 appearances. The following season he made just 7 appearances, playing his final game on Saturday, 9 October 1948 before moving on to Gorleston as their player-manager.
Albert did return to Villa however, acting as a Villa scout from 1956-58.
Albert had played under manager Alex Massie.
Albert passed away in Forres, Scotland on 27 December 2008 aged 93.
