On This Day
Villa end the season on consecutive 0-1 defeats but nothing can take away from their stunning campaign under Brian Little which sees exhilarating football almost from first to last and victory in the League Cup for a record fifth time.
Despite a slow end to the season, Brian Little’s first full season as Villa boss was an unmitigated success. A 4th place finish in the Premier League and a record equalling 5th League Cup win were the highlights however the emergence of an exciting formation prompting attacking football and a squad full of character suggested bright days ahead.
Centre back Paul Browne, 21, makes his second and final appearance in a Villa shirt before moving on to Raith Rovers for £120,000 in July 1996. Browne left with a record of W0 D1 L2 and 2 Bookings across his brief Villa career.
Lee Hendrie makes his 3rd appearance in a Villa shirt 6 months after his debut and for the first time in two months to make it W0 D1 L2, 2 Bookings and 1 Red Card so far in his Villa career.
Former Villa centre forward Paul Rideout came on as a 70’ substitute for Everton.
