MATCHDAY QUOTES
"Wise could have put the Blues 2-0 up had he converted the spot-kick but instead Villa staged a winning comeback at Stamford Bridge."
*The Sunday Life*
Sunday, 7 April 1996
Glenn Hoddle was left to reflect on the Dennis Wise penalty miss that proved the arguable turning point in defeat by Aston Villa.
"It's been the story of our season," Hoddle sighed.
Wise could have put the Blues 2-0 up had he converted the spot-kick but instead Villa staged a winning comeback at Stamford Bridge.
"We've started brightly here so many times, been 1-0 up, but haven't killed teams off," said Hoddle, doubtlessly also casting his mind back to last Sunday's FA Cup semi-final defeat by the same scoreline at the hands of Manchester United.
"We've had penalties missed at 1-0 up, great opportunities and chances gone by. Dennis is disappointed, he's missed the penalty that would have given us a 2.0 cushion."
John Spencer put Chelsea ahead after six minutes but goals from Milosevic 39 mins) and Yorke 59) sunk Chelsea.
"I was concerned how we let the reins of the game go. We had a good grip on it," Hoddle added.
