On This Day
QPR gain revenge for their League Cup exit as they inflict a first Premier League defeat in five on Villa as Lee Hendrie is sent off on debut.
Midfielder Lee Hendrie, 18, is sent off on his debut in a Villa shirt after joining as a trainee and signing professional forms in July 1993 to become the 712th player to play for Villa in first team League or Cup football.
Goalkeeper Nigel Spink, 37, replaces Mark Bosnich at half time for the second successive game in what would prove to be his final game for Villa after the veteran decided he did not have the desire to compete with the young Aussie for the #1 shirt. Spink played for Villa between 1979-80 and 1995-96 making 453 appearances (excluding FMC). Spinkโs 460 appearances was the highest of any Villa goalkeeper eclipsing Billy Georgeโs previous record of 399 appearances between 1897-98 and 1910-11.
Former Villa centre forward Tony Hateleyโs son, Mark, and future Villa assistant manager Ray Wilkins lined up for QPR.
What they Said
"Teenager Lee Hendrie was sent off on his first appearance to complete a miserable afternoon for Aston Villa."
Teenager Lee Hendrie was sent off on his first appearance to complete a miserable afternoon for Aston Villa.
The 18 year old substitute was dismissed in the eighth minute of injury time.
It needed a defiant display by Rangersโ giant American goalkeeper Jurgen Sommer to prevent Villa grabbing at least a point in a march they had dominated in long spells.
The 6ft 5ins keeper brilliantly kept out a hat-trick of scoring attempts by Villaโs Serbian striker Savo Milosevic - once memorably, mid way through the second half from a point blank header.
Sommer repeated his heroics in a frantic finish, somehow seeing out a close range header from Tommy Johnson and then tipping over a blockbuster by full back Alan Wright.
Villa badly missed the cutting edge usually provided by top scorer Dwight Yorke who missed the match with a broken nose, but still outplayed their London hosts for long spells only to end up in disarray, sending on reserve goalkeeper Nigel Spink as their third outfield substitute after Ian Taylor had been carried off on a stretcher in the prolonged injury time.
It did not end there as Hendrie, who had replaced the injured Mark Draper before half time was booked early in the second period was shown the red card right at the death when he blatantly blocked Rangers full back Rufus Brevett.
