On This Day
Villa win through to the League Cup final for the second time in three years as Arsenal fans - never known for under-reaction - disgrace themselves at Villa Park.
A goalless draw sees Villa qualify for their 7th League Cup final courtesy of the brace of away goals Dwight Yorke scored at Highbury a week earlier.
Steve Staunton makes his 175th start in a Villa shirt (180 Appearances) to make it W76 D48 L56, 15 Goals, 23 Assists and 10 Bookings so far in his Villa career.
Gary Charles makes his 50th appearance in a Villa shirt (48 Starts) to make it W26 D14 L10, 5 Assists and 1 Booking so far in his Villa career.
What they Said
"Stewards and police soon brought order and subdued the dramatic ending to a nerve-wracked semi-final."
ANGRY Arsenal fans soured Aston Villa's Coca-Cola Cup celebrations after seeing their own season shunted into the sidings.
They poured over the Villa Park hoardings and tried to clash with jubilant Midlanders on the pitch as Brian Little's men attempted a lap of honour.
Stewards and police soon brought order and subdued the dramatic ending to a nerve-wracked semi-final.
Bruce Rioch's hopes of beginning a new era for the Gunners with a trophy in his first season rested on this second leg.
But he chose to stifle the life out of a tie that was so vibrant at Hlghbury a week ago when Dennis Bergkamp had his side two goals ahead inside the first half-hour.
And in the end he paid the penalty for his caution, going out on the away goals rule after extra time.
Dwight Yorke's two=goal rescue mission down in London proving priceless.
Now Little seeks a double, hoping to lift the League Cup as a manager that he won as a player with the Villa 19 years ago.
Though Villa were cramped and anxious, their efficiency deservedly earned them their second final in three seasons.
And though entertainment was scarce they went closer to providing a goal than the Londoners.
While Savo Milosevic continues to look like a man lost in a penalty area, Yorke played with the confidence of a man in the goals in his previous games while Andy Townsend was the star for Villa.
