"Sheffield made several dashes, but the Villa played the better football, and John Cowan shot a third goal for them."

*The Manchester Courier and Lancashire General Advertiser*
Monday, 23 January 1899

SHEFFIELD UNITED V. ASTON VILLA.

At Bramall Lane, before 10,000 people. The United kicked off against the win, and Wilkes scored for the Villa after five minutes’ play.

Even and exciting play followed, George saved from Morren, and Bennett running down and centring Needham equalised after 27 minutes.

Rain now fell freely.

Foulkes saved from Devey and Athersmith, the Villa pressing vigorously.

Score at half time: Sheffield, one goal; Aston Villa, one goal.

On changing ends, Aston Villa played with good combination, despite the mud, and Johnson, after nine minutes, shot a second goal for them.

The same player missed a splendid chance of shooting another.

Sheffield made several dashes, but the Villa played the better football, and John Cowan shot a third goal for them.
