SUNDERLAND V. ASTON VILLA
These teams met at Roker Park on Saturday, before about twenty five thousand spectators. The ground, considering the recent rain, was in good condition. A strong wind was blowing towards the sea when the teams turned up.

Sunderland won the toss, and elected to play with the wind in their favour. Garraty started, but the Sunderland men soon got the upper hand, and put the Villains on the aggressive. Alter George had saved one or two shots a free kick was given against one of the visiting forwards. M'Neill placed splendidly, and Farquhar got possession. He put over to Fulton, and the latter, with a swift ground shot, beat George. The goal was scored just four minutes after the kick-off.

Following this lead of the Sunderland team some exciting play followed, and both defences were severely taxed. The Villa got well up and Wheldon just missed, a minute later Doig effected a marvellous save from Devey.

At the other end George saved wonderfully from Farquhar.

Villa now attacked again, and Templeton gave Devey a nice pass. The latter in front of goal let drive, and, beating Doig, put the teams on level terms.

The next item of interest was a splendid run down by the Sunderland forwards, Farquhar was very prominent in this, and his dribble in the last twenty yards was well applauded. He got right in front of goal, and with only George to beat he let drive and found the net. A minute or two later Farquhar made another fine run, and again brought about the downfall of George.

Half Time - Sunderland, three goals; Aston Villa, one goal.

On re-starting Sunderland were first to attack, but they were soon repelled. The Villains took up the running and Cowan shot. Doig caught, but dropped through his legs.

After this Sunderland pressed, and attacked the Villa goal. M’Latchie, with brilliant shot, scored number four for Sunderland.

The play still continued exciting, and at the finish the score stood Sunderland, four goals; Aston Villa, two goals.
