On This Day
Villa secure a fine win against first division Preston to reach their third FA Cup semi final in four seasons. Meanwhile, dumped out of the cup a while ago, Villa's title and promotion rivals Cardiff can only draw, so although they increase their lead at the top to three points, Villa have another game in hand.
Joe Mercer's Villa make it successive wins as they beat top flight side Preston in the quarter final of the FA Cup. North End are Villa's third top flight scalp in the Cup after Leeds and Chelsea were brushed aside in the third and fourth rounds.
