On This Day
Villa lose, but only just, in an unexceptional FA Cup semi final on neutral territory - the Hawthorns. In better news Cardiff can only draw in the League and though they move level on points with Villa they remain second having played a game more.
Joe Mercer's Villa can't make it four top flight scalps in the Cup this season as they are beaten narrowly in the semi final by high flying Wolves who would go on to finish runners up in the first division this season.
