What they Said
“I think we are not showing some doubts. I think we are not feeling we are playing under pressure.
“Premier League, Europa League, when we played Carabao Cup, and tomorrow playing in the FA Cup, each match, I have the responsibility.
“The responsibility for the club history, for the supporters, and for our challenges we have as a professional.
“We are ambitious and we set our standard high, and to keep it is our objective. How we can improve everything around the club is my responsibility.
“Of course, my first responsibility is to try to get performance on the field, with the players, with our tactics, with our mentality, with the players, how I can manage them, and how I can get the best of them.
“But as well, we have the responsibility and myself, I am involved in it, to try to increase everything.
“How? Through Premier League, to try to be in European position, to try to be in the top position where we are now, to keep it. Of course, to keep it against the teams there are now, it’s very difficult.
“It’s a very difficult Premier League for every team, and only the team being resilient with the level they have, each one, and being consistent, being so, so demanding, how they can achieve their objective, is really a huge challenge.
“How we are third in front of those teams, and how we are performing, competing, and being resilient with our structure and strong in our mentality – because the mentality is very important, how we are building it through the players, because sometimes important players, they are not available, and other players, they are playing and getting the same performance collectively and individually – is really fantastic.
“But to keep it is my challenge. And to be in the top position in Premier League and to keep, hopefully, we can finish late during the season in Europa League, and try to be protagonists and to enjoy with our supporters, each moment we are playing and we are travelling or we are playing in Villa Park.
“And now, FA Cup, last year we played semi-final. It was a big defeat we had against Palace, and they deserved to beat us, but we enjoyed one day in the semi-final in London.
“And this is the objective for the supporters, the exciting moment we can share with our supporters, to be in some moments, a special moment.
“Of course, every match in Villa Park is special with our supporters, but to travel away, another country in Europe, or to travel to London to play in the semi-final of the FA Cup or one final, of course, is the next objective.
“And we have this responsibility, and, of course, it’s very difficult to get a title, but when I arrived here, my objective was to play in Europe and to get a title, and, of course, still the same objective I have.
“And I am sharing it, my opinion, with the players, my objective with the players, with the club, with everybody, and tomorrow, we are playing FA Cup.
“Of course, we are involving now in the Premier League, like we are, we are involved in Europa League, like we are, and FA Cup is another very, very demanding way to try to get something.
“Of course, the draw was not the best because we are playing against Tottenham away, but tomorrow we’ll face them, trying to get at best, and of course, focusing the match with our structure, with our idea, with our performance, and hopefully we can show tomorrow as well, our good form.”
Unai Emery, pre-match.
"He's really showing commitment we need from him. He played on Wednesday, knowing he had a small injury & he did the effort to play. Easier to decide not to play, but he played. He wasn't feeling good in 1st half. We decided to stop him.
"He's doing a really good effort to help the team. I am now happy with him. I'm seeing him like I want.
"After last summer, it was difficult for everybody and for him as well, now I can see his eyes, belief and trust in him."
Unai Emery on Emiliano Martínez.
"Marco is fantastic. His commitment, every day like with Olsen, to be sub for Emi Martinez is not easy. How he responded, being patient & ready to play when we need him, really fantastic. As a person, respect for him in the dressing room is massive."
Unai Emery on Marco Bizot.
"Sometimes we are watching some highlights of him and sharing with him his best moments in his career. He is trying to get it, and we are trying to help and support him. Now we have four or five months to get it, to strongly focus to get it.
""Now we need his qualities, numbers and being brilliant in actions. There's still time to get it, so keep going and be focused."
Unai Emery on Jadon Sancho.
"The first 45 minutes, we controlled the game like we planned. We created chances, we scored two goals, we dominated, and we defended very well. The second half, Spurs started pushing more, they scored a goal. Progressively in the second half, we were feeling better on the field. Again, good positioning and dominating with the ball. Not creating big chances but getting the control of the game like we planned and how we did in the first half.
"Of course, in 90 minutes overall, I think we deserved to get this win, and of course, how the players responded on the field showed the mentality we're building is really fantastic.
"Fantastic. Both players fantastic, and today played 90 minutes. Of course, the qualities and the skills of Buendia are really helping us a lot. And today, playing 90 minutes, with his versatile position, playing in a left side and inside as a 10, we did both during the match. In each position, he's performing very well and his commitment to help, get his task done and focus, overall, is really fantastic.
"Especially today, the performance of Morgan [Rogers] and Buendia was really fantastic, and each one can feel comfortable playing with their qualities."
"Yes, we need players. We're in the Premier League, the Europa League, and this competition we are respecting a lot. Because last year we played the semi-final. There are thousands of supporters here with us, giving us responsibility. The FA Cup is a way for a trophy, a way for Europe as well. Secondly, how we are managing the squad, different players, different moments, some players injured, some players coming back from injury like Pau Torres, and we need players for the next matches, the next competition, Premier League, Europa League, FA Cup."
Unai Emery, post-match.
"It is an objective, but only one team wins the competition. One team. We are not a contender, and there are more teams contenders than us.
"This is a way for a trophy, and in Aston Villa’s history, there are seven FA Cup trophies. Last season, we enjoyed the semi-final at Wembley with our supporters. We respect the competition and played focused on the match like we have been."
Unai Emery, post-match.
"Fantastic. He's versatile, on the left or as a number 10. He dominates his position behind the striker. He's a competitive player, and he's always showing his commitment to this club. How he plays with enthusiasm is fantastic, and he has quality."
Unai Emery on Emiliano Buendia.
"We knew it was a difficult game for the third round of the cup. To come here away is difficult; they're a top team, they're struggling a little bit at the moment, but we know the quality that they have.
"We had a really good first half. We pushed a lot, we had clear chances, we were 2-0 up at half-time. In the second half, we dropped the intensity a little bit; they had chances because they have the quality. But we kept fighting, and I think we deserved the win.
"I have no idea. The first thing I did at the final whistle was go to the floor because it was a high-intensity game, so I was quite tired after a lot of running. I don't know what happened, but I think it's football, so I think it stays on the pitch and we move on.
"With the structure we have, it's good for Morgan and me to play together. We try to find pockets behind the midfielders. We enjoyed the first half; we created chances, and I think the second goal was clear as well. It was a good game."
"We go game by game. Today was the first FA Cup round for us. We need to stay focused in each competition, fight for everything and keep looking forward. We have a week to rest and then face Everton at home, it's going to be a really tough game"
Emiliano Buendía.
"We wanted to build on the first half. We were good in the first half. Second half, Spurs came out really well. They're a good team, they're at home.
"They played really well second half, we had to dig deep, we had to work and defend our box. We did well, and I think we deserved the win in the end.
"It was good build-up play, then Emi just flicked it to me, and I wanted to get the shot off as soon as I could. Luckily, it went in, and I was really happy.
"I'm loving it. I'm feeling good, I'm in a good bit of form, I'm feeling positive and confident, but so are the team, and that's the most important thing. As a team and as a collective, we're playing really well at the moment.
"We were bitterly disappointed that we couldn't go the whole way last year, having got so far. We've set out to try and do as well as we can.
"This was a big test for us in the third round, and I thought we overcame it really well.”
Morgan Rogers.
"I don't have an update. Tomorrow, we check him, and hopefully it's not something important."
Unai Emery on Boubacar’s injury.
