ASTON VILLA v. WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS.
These teams met on the Aston Villa’s now ground after the athletic sports yesterday, taking the field at five o’clock.
There was a crowd of fully 45,000 spectators present, and the weather, although cold, was fine.
Each team was fully represented, and the Wanderers winning the toss Campbell kicked for the Villa against a slight breeze.
The home forwards were quickly away, and Cowan missed a very soft chance in the first minute.
Then, after a brief incursion by the Wanderers, the League Champions were again to the front.
After some superb passing, James Cowan shot a brilliant goal.
The Wolves got away quickly from the centre kick, and were twice given a good sight of goal, but nothing came of it either.
After a multitude of fouls the Villa forced the work, and James Cowan getting possession, raced the length of the field, beating Tonks at the distance and centring beautifully, but Campbell shot wide.
The Villa were still pressing when half-time arrived, and the scores stood - Villa, one goal Wanderers, nil.
Upon resuming the homesters had the benefit of slight wind, and getting away quickly, Villa forced a corner, and Devey netted the ball after two minutes’ play.
Villa continued to keep the play in the Wolves’ territory, and, after some smart attacks Cowan, sent in a long shot which struck the upright and bounced into the net, registering a third goal for the homesters.
The visitors made two good attempts on goal shortly afterwards, but Whitehouse proved equal to all emergencies, and cleared in style.
After some superb passing Athersmith shot for goal, but the ball was cleared, when Campbell came up and netted the ball a fourth time.
From the kick-on Villa again raced away, and Athersmith seemed certain to score, but Tennant managed to clear.
The Wanderers gained four fruitless corners, and then the homesters got away again with with a rush, and Campbell registered another goal.
The game continued fast and exciting the finish, but no further points were registered. Result: Villa, five goals; Wanderers, nil.
