MATCH REPORT

*The Sporting Life*
Monday, 8 February 1897

BURY v. ASTON VILLA. THE VILLA IN FORM AGAIN. This return engagement was played on the Bury Ground, before 9,000 spectators, in capital weather and on ground which appeared perfect, but cut up a little before the close. The home side began hostilities by pressing slightly, but they soon found out that their opponents were in capital form. Campbell, Wheldon, and Smith early on prominent for stylish play, which taxed the energies of Darrach, Barbour, and Montgomery to the utmost. The custodian, however, was in capital order, and repelled half a dozen shots in just as many seconds. From a centre by Athersmith, Wheldon missed a grand opening, and then from a Bury attack and shot by Plant, Wilkes was lucky to get rid of the ball. The Villa attack worked up the field in their inimitable style, and secured a corner, but “Monty” got the ball away cleverly. Half time was fast approaching before Campbell, after a plucky run. broke through all opposition and scored a beautiful goal. This was only the signal for the ex-Celt to show his ability, for in the next three minutes he put in two capital shots, and completely non-plussed Montgomery, who was beaten all over. The Bury men might have scored by Millar, but the chance was missed and at half time the Villa were leading by two nil. In the second half the home lot were expected to show a lot better form, but they proved disappointing. Cowan and Crabtree were in brilliant form in the Villa ranks and could not be beaten, while if by chance the ball was got behind them, Wilkes was ever ready. Bury played nicely but were overmatched. Villa, two; Bury, nil.
