WEST BROMWICH ALBION V. ASTON VILLA.

These teams met Stoney Lane on Saturday, in their first League fixture. Notwithstanding the wretched weather, fully 12,000 spectators journeyed to the Albion grounds to witness the match. The ground was in very fair condition, and Devey elected to commence the game up hill. The visiting forwards quickly got away and an awkward miss from Williams nearly let in Athersmith, but the home forwards cleared and altered the venue of play, and Crabtree stopped the progress of Bassett and McLeod.

Albion became dangerous from a foul awarded them in mid-field, but after smartly clearing, the Villains made a furious attack on the home goal, and after some very neat passing, Wheldon centred to Devey who was just in the right place, and netted the ball, leaving the score at half-time— Villa, one; Albion, none.

Villa were the first to break away upon resuming play, but Devey kicked over the bar, and play was returned. The Throstles wore awarded a foul in the visitors' quarters, and Williams placed the ball through without anyone touching it. The home forwards now went to work most determinedly, and during scrimmage in the Villa goal, Garfield headed through, and equalised the score. Shortly after a penalty kick was awarded the homesters, and Williams cleverly registered the Throstles’ second point.

The League champions continually bombarded the home goal, but the home defence left nothing to desired.

Just before time the play was bit loose in the Villa Quarters, and Garfield rushing in registered third point for the Albion, and the game ended—West Bromwich Albion three goals; Aston Villa, one.
