"The visitors won the toss, and, with probably bad judgment, decided to start uphill."

*The Sporting Life*
Monday, 1 February 1897

ASTON VILLA v. NEWCASTLE UNITED.

The Newcastle United team paid a visit to the League champions on Saturday to decide who should enter the second round of the Cup competition. The visitors won the toss, and, with probably bad judgment, decided to start uphill.

Campbell started the game on behalf of the homesters, and Athersmith getting getting possession sent in a splendid centre, and when the ball dropped Wheldon was well ip, and although he headed into goal in a clever manner, Watts had no difficulty clearing.

Collins and Connell broke away for the United, but Evans checked them, when Smellie got possession he went straight for goal. He was unable to steady himself in time to shoot, however, otherwise he would have found Wilkes plenty to do. Spencer for alongside him and beat him before he could shoot.

The Villa now settled down, and the left wingers made a lot of ground, eventual gaining a corner, which, however, proved fruitless. The homesters, however, kept the game pretty well in the United quarters, and as a result of some clever dodging, Wheldon passed to Campbell, who for right in front of goal, and should have shot immediately, but he evidently preferred to softly pass to the wing, the result being that a very good opportunity was missed.

Play now went into the Villa quarters, where Ostler made a very good attempt at goal, but Wilkes got clear of a somewhat troublesome shot.

The home team were quickly to the front again and Athersmith for the ball, and raced away, he had only to beat the backs, and he sent the ball on and raced after it, outpacing his opponents and sending in a lightning shot, which Watts has no earthly chance of dealing with, and the ball travelled into the net.

Connell got away from the restart, but was stopped, and Smith made a splendid run up the field, and Watts running out to save, Wheldon took the opportunity of putting in a well judged shot, which took effect within another minute.

Smith got away again and scored a third goal.

A fourth goal came off White, a Newcastle back, and at the interval the score stood - Villa, four, United, nil.

Upon resuming, the visitors steadied down and played much finer defence and attack, invading the home quarters repeatedly, but he Villa played a good defence, and the visitors could not break through. Smellie had a rare chance of shooting, but failed to take advantage of it. He was wishing six yards of goal, but seemed as though he could not loose the ball, and Evans tackled him and cleared.

After Smellie had missed a second chance, the homesters broke, and Devey made a smart dribbled, but no good came of it. Play slowed down considerably and after a time the Villa settled down in the visitors’ quarters and Wheldon added a fifth goal, leaving the final score - Aston Villa, five; Newcastle United, nil.
