"Derby did not make the most of their chances front of goal, and Johnny Goodall’s loss was glaringly apparent. Villa thus won three goals to Derby's one."
*The Sporting Life*

DERBY COUNTY V. ASTON VILLA.
These teams antagonised each other at Derby on Saturday. There would be close upon 8,000 people present when the game commenced, and Derby, who won the toss, kicked towards the Town goal. M'Queen was at once conspicuous, but he was driven back and Athersmith was seen tearing away, only to be stopped neatly by Methven.
The Villa again showed up prominently, but Cox was all there and stopped their progress very opportunely. More brilliant play by M’Queen and Stevenson was followed by run by Bloomer, who forced a corner, which, however, proved fruitless.
Then the Villa attacked, and Wheldon rushing up beat A. Goodall and steered the object safely towards the aperture, where Robinson tried desperately, but could not reach the object, and thus Villa scored the first goal.
Derby pressed very hotly after this, but so well did the Brums defend that it looked great odds against Derby. However, they did not relax their efforts as Cox sent a hot one to Miller, who, being in close proximity to the Villa sticks, headed through, thus bringing about an equalisation.
This was the game at half time, County now showed up in fine style, and Whitehouse returned, but Derby returned to the attack.
The game was fast and exciting, but the Villa appeared better in front of goal and from a combined attack the Brums shot a second.
Whilst keeping up their excellent form a third point was secured them.
Derby did not make the most of their chances front of goal, and Johnny Goodall’s loss was glaringly apparent. Villa thus won three goals to Derby's one.
