THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE.
DIVISION I.
BURNLEY v. ASTON VILLA.
This League game, which was abandoned on the Burnley Ground on account of the state of the pitch on December 12, when the score stood at two to one in favour of the Villa, was replayed yesterday (Monday).
The ground was heavy, and rain fell during a part of the game. The Birmingham team had been staying in Blackpool since playing Bury on Saturday, and turned up at full strength, while Burnley tried Toman on the wing and Robertson in centre. The Villans were not long in making it quite plain that they meant having the two points possible on the game. They played down the incline in the first half, and the speed and accurate play soon got the better of the home lot, Tatham twice saved from Campbell and Devey.
The whole of the Villa front rank came away in a body, and Campbell put on a goal with a lightning-like shot. Devey soon followed with a second, while again the same player scored from a perfect centre by Athersmith.
All these points had been scored in about a quarter of an hour.
Burnley now played a lot better, and Wilkes and his backs were called on frequently.
Ten minutes before half time Robertson scored after a corner. and then Toman put on a second, so that at the interval the Villa led by three to two.
In the second half the Villa went off a great speed, and the home goal keeper had a hard time of it. He kept his charge grandly, hot shots from Campbell, Cowan, Devey, and Wheldon all coming nicely hand and being cleared. At length the home backs were beaten through a slip by Place, sen., who let in Wheldon. He got well up, turned over to Campbell, and this player scored.
Burnley after half an hours play bucked up a lot and Place, jun. rushing in, turned the ball over to Black, who notched a third goal.
Up to the end Burnley pressed but could not score, and the Villa won four goals to three.
