ON THIS DAY
Dick Taylor's wildly inconsistent Villa end the season with three wins in five to secure their top flight status but boast a record of just fifteen wins, five draws and twenty two defeats in forty two League matches. As a result, Villa finish 16th under Taylor for the second successive season as the club stagnates on and off the pitch. Meanwhile, forward Phil Woosnam made his final appearance for Villa aged 33 before moving on to Atlanta Chiefs in June 1966. Woosnam played for Villa between 1962-63 and 1965-66 making 125 appearances and scoring 29 goals however his creative contribution provided significantly more and his loss would be underlined in stark terms in 1966-67.
