On This Day
Villa complete their remarkable end of season rise as they beat Everton at Goodison to secure a remarkable joint 5th placed finish alongside Manchester United although officially classified as sixth.
Villa's final day victory is highlighted by an incredible strike trom the departing Tommy Thompson who hooked the ball over his shoulder and into the net in one swift movement.
Villa only entered the top 10 in April having languished 16th at the turn of the year but ten wins in fourteen League games under Eric Houghton completely changed the complexion of the season.
Villa make it twenty wins, seven draws and fifteen defeats in their forty two division one matches as they end the season in excellent form to clinch 6th place in the League.
Centre forward Tommy Thompson - a key figure in Villa's new year revival - makes his final appearance aged just 26 before moving to Preston North End in June. Tommy played for Villa between 1950-51 and 1954-55 making 165 appearances and scoring 76 goals.
